Dennis Carlock, better known by his stage name "Rotten Rod," is a figure deeply entrenched in the punk rock and heavy metal scenes, particularly associated with the Sunset Strip in Los Angeles during its heyday. Hailing from Central Illinois, Carlock made a name for himself as a vocalist and frontman across various bands, leaving a lasting impression on the underground music community.
His musical journey began in his home state with his first band, Agent Orange (1979–1980), followed by stints in cover bands like Izzi (1981) and Raw-10 (1980–1982). Seeking bigger opportunities, he relocated to California in the early 1980s, immersing himself in the vibrant Sunset Strip scene. One of his most notable projects was Knightmare II, where he served as the frontman during the mid-to-late 1980s, a band that gained some cult recognition in the heavy metal underground. After Knightmare II disbanded in 1988, Carlock continued to explore various musical ventures, including The Rod Squad (1989), Crooner (1990–1991), and later Rotten Rod and the Warheads (1994–2003), which eventually shortened its name to just "Rotten Rod." This latter project included notable musicians like Wanda Ortiz (later of The Iron Maidens) and briefly Dave Watson (later of Hirax).
Carlock’s career also saw him perform at iconic venues like The Roxy and Whisky a Go Go, cementing his reputation as a Sunset Strip veteran. His nickname "Rotten Rod" reflects his gritty, rebellious persona, fitting the punk and metal ethos of the era. Beyond performing, he’s been involved in other music-related activities, such as co-hosting "The Rockzone Legends Show" on WDLJ 97.5 FM and playing with the AC/DC tribute band AZ/DZ in more recent years.
While Carlock stepped away from the music business for a time—reportedly working as a TV show moderator—he has since returned to the scene, sharing "war stories" from his two decades in LA and remaining active in regional performances. His discography, though not mainstream, is documented on platforms like Discogs, where fans can explore his contributions as a vocalist, writer, and producer. Rotten Rod’s legacy is that of a local legend who bridged Midwest roots with West Coast excess, embodying the raw energy of the genres he championed.
